No tsunami threat from Alaska earthquake

No tsunami risk to New Zealand. Gulf of Alaska earthquake has been revised from magnitude 8 to 7.9.

MCDEM has assessed the information with the assistance of science advisors. Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will affect New Zealand. Coastal inundation (flooding of land areas near the shore) is not expected. Strong currents and surges may be experienced for the 24 hour period from midday, 24th January.

The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management has received notification of a magnitude 8 earthquake in the Gulf of Alaska.

 

The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management and GNS Science are currently assessing whether the earthquake has created a tsunami that could affect New Zealand.

 

If a tsunami has been generated in this location it is not likely to arrive in New Zealand for at least 12 hours.
