Are you are year 12 or 13 student living in the Bay of Plenty?
Fancy a chance to walk on one of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes?
Then Exercise Whakaari may just be the opportunity you have been waiting for.
Exercise Whakaari is a two day workshop for year 12 and 13 students. It will be held on the 8th and 9th April 2017 in Whakatane. The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to discover how Civil Defence operates and manages hazards within New Zealand. Participants will learn about their local hazards, personal preparedness and how their local Civil Defence group works to keep communities safe.
Following this workshop, participants will be able to name the various hazards that could impact their home and describe the possible effects each hazard has on people. Participants will also walk away with some tools up their sleeve to ensure themselves, their families, and their communities are more prepared should disaster strike.
As a bonus participants will then get to see how all of this work fits together in the context of a volcanic eruption. This will include an incredible opportunity to take a walk on one of New Zealand’s most active volcanoes (White Island/Whakaari) while having the chance to have a chat to some of our very own local Civil Defence staff and a volcanologist from GNS Science.
Applications for this workshop have now closed.
Successful applicants will be notified no later than Monday 13th March 2017.
