Why the Bay of Plenty is Earthquake-Prone

Shakeout (7)

Did you know, Aotearoa is one of the most geologically active countries in the world due to its location along a major tectonic plate boundary known as the Pacific Ring of Fire? This means we experience lots of earthquakes! On average, there are over 20,000 earthquakes a year in and around New Zealand with about 100 to 150 of these earthquakes big enough to be felt.

Our Hazardscape video is here to help you learn a bit more about earthquakes, why the Bay of Plenty is exposed to them, and some steps you can take to keep yourself and your whānau safe.

If you’d like to know more about earthquakes or other hazards, you can read the full version of the Hazardscape Report on our website.

You can also visit the Bay of Plenty Natural Hazards Viewer on the Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s website to view the location of active fault lines in our region.

The more you know, the more prepared you are.
